Frequently Asked Questions

1. What's my password?
When you joined PRX you either picked or were assigned a temporary password along with a user name. Only you know the password. We don't, but we can send you a new one: just go to PRX.org. Under the log-in box, click on the link below that says 'Forgot your password?'

Our wise computers will send the password to the email address in your user profile. If, for some reason, there is no email address there you won't get the email (hey, it happens sometimes). In which case, just drop us an email at help@prx.org and we'll assign you another temporary password.

2. This piece keeps buffering or I get an "error opening file" message.
We suggest trying a different browser when this happens. It is a bug that usually appears in Explorer (and will go away on its own eventually), but has also been known to pop up on other browsers. Firefox is good browser available for free here: http://www.mozilla.com/firefox.

Also, try checking your browser for updates or try listening from a different computer.

3. I made this wonderful radio piece that should go on your site. How do I do that?
If you already have a PRX producer membership, follow these instructions. If you don't have a membership, what are you waiting for? It's free! Sign up now.

4. What if I can't upload my audio through the browser?
You can also upload your audio file with a plain ol' FTP client. Just put in www.prx.org for the server, and your PRX username and password for the FTP username and password.

5. What is this "FTP" you speak of?
"FTP" stands for "File Transfer Protocol." Basically, it allows you to connect your computer to a server to upload files. You can download the following clients for free:

For Mac OS 9
For Mac OS 10
For Windows

6. I'm an administrator for a station or group account and I'd like to add someone. How do I do that?
Each user must go through the sign-up process before they can become a member. You can do this for your future member (but you'll need to know his/her email address, phone number, city, state and zip code, and you'll create a password for them), or - perhaps more logically - the new user can sign up and request admission into your station or producer group account.

Instructions for sign-up:

  • Click on "Sign Up" on the home page or click on this link: http://www.prx.org/membership/
  • Choose Station Staff Member, Station Producer, or Station Group Member from the "I am a" dropdown.
  • Click on the Station or Group Finder and type your station call letters or group name. Select that account.
  • Fill in all required fields.
  • Click "Register."
  • The new user will receive an activation email to enable his/her account, and your account admin will receive a confirmation email for his/her group status.
  • Once the new user enables his/her account and the admin verifies him/her, he/she will have an account within your group.

7. I tried to sign up for a membership hours/days/eons ago, but I never received a verification email. What gives?
Our verification email might have gotten mistakenly and innocently snatched up by your spam filter. Check your spam folder for the email. If you still can't find it, drop us a line and we can activate it for you.

8. Is PRX for public radio stations only?
No, PRX welcomes any and all noncommercial community, college, LPFM, and international broadcast stations. We consider additional acquirers on a case by case basis.

9. What's the story with rights?
As a producer you need to own or manage the rights to any piece you upload for distribution on PRX. Once you've uploaded a piece you set the terms for how stations can use your work for broadcast and/or online use, but it's assumed that any work you put on PRX is available for public radio broadcast and internet simulcast (most stations simulcast their signal). Any additional distribution options such as podcasting or sale through Audible.com is on an "opt-in" basis.

As a station when you license a piece on the site you must agree to the terms set by the producer.

10. How/when/why do I get paid for my work on PRX?
We divide the year into quarters. You'll get a check in the mail shortly after each quarter ends, IF:
a.) You've had a piece or more licensed (and they were not priced at 0 points, or "free") AND
b.) Your account status was "Pro" - or paid for - at any point in that quarter.

11. How can I keep track of my licensed pieces?
Easy! Just go to the "My PRX" tab and click on "My Reports" (or "Station Reports" if you're with a station, or "Group Reports" if you're with a producer group). Select the quarter you're interested in viewing from the drop-down menu under "Earnings." You can export and print these statements.

To view all of your licensed pieces at once, go to "My PRX," then "My Reports," and then click on the "Pieces sold by (your name/station/group)."

12. I want to get paid for licenses! How to I upgrade to a Pro account? How do I renew my current Pro account?
Go here.

13. Can I have your email address so I can ask a question that wasn't answered here?
Sure! Just take a look at our pointers for writing a good support request first.
